Merrymount's Good Neighbor Award
2013 - Q1
Quarter One 2013
Jim Sullivan and his wife Marion are long time Merrymount residents, raising their two children, Neal and Lisa here. Lisa never left Merrymount and is raising her two sons, Brendan and Padraig in the same great neighborhood she grew up in. Jim is a true example of what is considered a “good neighbor,” though many will argue that he’s not just a good neighbor, but an outstanding friend and family man as well.
Jim was nominated for this award because he opens his doors and pool to all the neighborhood kids to take a swim on a hot summer day, always keeping a watchful eye on all that come by for a dip. Those that are lucky enough to know Jim, know that his kindness extends beyond a summer swim in his pool.
Back in the days when our beach would be crowded every evening and weekends with neighborhood families enjoying the water, Jim appointed himself the beach lifeguard. After a long day at work Jim would join his family at the beach and head right to the waters edge and begin counting heads. Many times he would have to swim out and bring back a child or two who’s float was taking them out to the bay.
Jim loves our annual Fourth of July events and used to always walk in our neighborhood parade, but with the typical Jim trait of watching for others, he was more concerned that no child would get to near the edge of a truck or flatbed.
Jim’s kindness has carried over to our neighborhood church as a member of the Holy Name Society. He not only enjoyed teaching CCD in the early years, but would do a prayer service every Thursday morning, so Father English could have one day off.
It’s not surprising that his giving nature has extended beyond our neighborhood as a coach in Koch Club and proudly walked each year with his team in the Flag Day parade.
When asked why he and Marion haven’t made the move to Florida like so many New Englanders do in retirement, Jim is quick to answer, “but everyone is here, why go to Florida?”
Thank you for being such a great asset to our community!

Communication Is Key
Last year’s goal of improving communication has been met, yet there is always room for improvement. We hope our newsletters have been well received as well as our updated website. Emails containing upcoming events have increased and this year we mailed the annual bills for our membership drive in hopes of insuring that all Merrymount residents are included. If you wish to volunteer for any upcoming events, to be a street captain or to suggest a new event or fundraiser, feel free to contact any of the board members listed in this newsletter or email merrymountquincy@verizon.net .
